Difficult at first glance is Paul’s command to the church in Thessalonica states to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). How can I ever do that? Day and night, week after week, to keep praying without stopping. I just can’t picture myself doing as some, repeating a repetitious litany of words, taking on a mechanical form of prayer. Jesus gave what some would call a formula for prayer and is recorded in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 11, verses 2 – 5. And He said unto them, "When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil." But rather than repeating this prayer endlessly, may I take a moment to consider a different, more intimate perspective of this passage and how my life can be transformed into unceasing prayer.
Our Father, who art in heaven - God truly is my Father. He has brought new life to me. And He is not just the Father of Jesus, but of me as well. Hallowed be thy name - His name is Holy and I will keep it that way in thoughts, words, and actions. Thy kingdom come - Every kingdom needs a king and He is King of my life; through thick and thin He is Lord. They will be done, as in heaven, so in earth - It’s not about me or my plans, but Him and His plans for me. He cast out the rebellion in heaven at the fall of Lucifer and removes the rebellion from me as I submit to Him. I will be humble before Him, love His mercy toward me, and do what He calls me to do. Give us day by day our daily bread - He does provide all that I have and I know that. And forgive us our sins - He has forgiven my sins through Jesus on the Cross at Calvary. I will not deliberately heap any more sin on Jesus. For we also forgive every one that is indebted to us - Just as I am forgiven, I will forgive those around me - I will remember that it is not my will I should be doing, but His. And lead us not into temptation - He will not lead me into temptation. I do that so very well myself. I want Him to lead me, and as He leads I will follow. But deliver us from evil - I will trust Him to be victorious in my life when evil approaches and attacks. To live a life this way is to pray unceasingly. John the Baptist stated it very well in his ministry, “I must decrease so He can increase.” May I decrease and make even more room for Him. |
